Motility DMS Data Breach: A Wake-Up Call for Dealerships
October 14, 2025
In August 2025, Motility Software Solutions, a widely used dealer management system (DMS) provider for powersport and RV dealerships, suffered a significant ransomware attack that compromised the personal data of over 766,000 individuals. The breach exposed sensitive information, including names, birthdates, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license details. Although Motility has restored its systems and implemented additional security measures, the incident highlights the critical importance of third-party risk management.
Dealerships rely heavily on DMS platforms to manage inventory, customer relationships, and financial operations. However, outsourcing these functions doesn’t outsource the risk. When a vendor is breached, your customers’ data and your reputation are on the line. Your customers trusted you with their personal information and may come to you for answers!
For dealerships using Motility DMS, here are three immediate steps to take:
- Confirm if your dealership was affected by contacting Motility directly.
- Enroll in the free identity monitoring services offered through LifeLock before the December 19 deadline.
- Review your contract and data-sharing practices with Motility to understand what protections and liabilities exist. Make sure you have some attestation of the security protocols Motility implements to protect against and mitigate such actions as that which just occurred!
To strengthen your dealership’s overall cybersecurity posture, consider these five actions:
- Conduct a vendor risk assessment for all third-party partners with whom you share customer private data.
- Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA) across all systems.
- Train staff on phishing and social engineering threats.
- Regularly back up critical data and test restoration procedures.
- Establish an incident response plan that includes vendor breaches.
